The BIGGEST mistake of our lives & a journey back to fertility

Psalm 137 3-5
Children are a gift from the Lord;
they are a reward from him.
Children born to a young man
are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.
How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!

In order to tell you about the biggest mistake of our lives (in our opinion) I will give you a back story leading up to it.  I have been praying about whether or not to share this with the "world" or continue to keep it private amongst a few family members and a handful of friends, and I continue to feel led to sharing our story.

In the summer of 2003 my parents were loading up their moving truck to move to Colorado. I had been wondering if something was up with me for a couple days, and decided that afternoon to head to our apartment and take a "test". It was positive. I went back to my parents house to tell my husband, "you remember that thing we were talking about?", him- "ya", me- "it was positive", him- "oh" with a deer in the headlights look.

This was not in our life plan!!! Jeff was supposed to finish school, we were both supposed to work for a couple years to pay off debt and save money to buy a house. We kept it to ourselves for a few days as we helped drive my parents and their stuff out to Colorado. After telling my parents and feeling the relief of their support we felt better about things. And in April of 2004 we welcomed Mr. Colby into the world! What fun I had with that boy! (and still do) We knew I was going to be a stay at home mom, and I have always loved every minute of it!

When Colby turned 1 we knew we wanted to add to the family and have kiddos close together. We always said we wanted 2 or 3 kids. It took a grueling 3 months to get pregnant, but it finally happened and we were so excited. I was REALLY hoping for a girl, because i have always had a super close relationship with my mom and wanted to have the same with my own daughter. At the anatomy scan when I was half way through my pregnancy they told us we were having a baby girl- and I was so happy- I was literally sobbing in the ultrasound room. In February of 2006 miss Hallie (Hal-e) Jane was born!!

When Hallie was about 1 we decided it was time for another baby! So we got busy ;-) and well he basically just looked at me and I was pregnant again. And lo and behold another baby girl was on the way! In January of 2008 Miss Sadie came into the world.

At this point we had a 3 yr old, an almost 2 year old and a newborn...overwhelmed much??

Since the thing to do seemed to be get a vasectomy and not have to worry- we scheduled the appointment. No one discouraged us not to. No one said are you sure- this is a big decision. At this point though I am not sure I would have listened. We were overwhelmed with little ones, in a whole lotta debt, and I was dealing with minor PPD. So we made the appointment and Jeff had a vasectomy when Sadie was only 2 months old.

Fast forward 2 years. We have paid off most of that whole lotta debt...and I started getting an itch. An itch only women can relate to. (no not that kind of itch) a baby itch! The 3 we had were bigger and more responsible- we are homeschooling now, so no reason to get the kids off to school so I can go back to work. So I mentioned to Jeff that I wanted a baby and he laughed. A few months later I brought it up again (I am at this point fully aware its not possible but still talking about it) and he said "We played God and now we have to deal with it". OUCH! He was right though. We did play God. Why in the world would be break something that should never have been broken in the first place? Why would we take matters into our own hands and not keep Jeff the way God made him? We had a lot to think about.

I knew vasectomy reversals were expensive. We have known people that had them and they are not covered by insurance, and they cost over 10k dollars. So not an option for us. Although I decided to check out google anyways and see what was out there. I researched them a little and found a few doctors that did them at discounted rates. One was in Oklahoma. That was a day's drive away. And it was only $1,700. So I prayed..A LOT! And another few months later I brought it up to Jeff again..and guess what he told me. "I have always wanted more kids"- what?!?!??! Why in the world did we get a vasectomy then?!? Can't change that.

Now we were on the same page. We both felt led by God to start the process of booking the appointment and getting this all figured out. We were gonna get my husband FIXED!!!! He was truly broken. Dr. Wilson seemed too good to be true though with his low price of $1,700. So I researched him more, and found a great site on Baby Center full of women who have gone through the same thing raving about this Dr. He talks fast they said (they weren't kidding- remember the micro machine guy commercials?? ya faster than that!!) he doesn't have many people skills...nope didn't but he was good at his job. He does 3 surgeries a day and used to be a heart surgeon. So he is good at reconnecting small tubes. Even though Dr. Wilson's fee's were cheaper then most it was still a lot of money for us to come up with. Jeff did our taxes and guess what?? There was JUST ENOUGH of our refund left over for us to get this surgery done- so blessed! And feeling like we are still following the Lord's plan for us.

We knew there was only two days we were available to go get this surgery done, so we needed to score an appt. on the EXACT day and time we were able to be there. Dr. Wilson keeps his prices low by having an online scheduling system and no secretary. And he was booked 3 months in advance. I knew the day that the next available day would open up and had to act fast because the appointments get taken within minutes of opening up. Long story short but we got the EXACT day AND time we needed. Whew! Thank you God.

We had our trip planned and knew we had to take the kids. This was going to be interesting. We couldn't tell them what was going on- they wouldn't understand. Colby had just turned 7 so we just told them daddy needed a surgery on his leg.(HA!) The whole trip went off without a hitch, the kids did great, and Jeff was in pain but we all made it home alive the next day after LOTS of driving.

We did get a little bad news. For only being 3 years from having had a vasectomy the Dr. gave us the worst chances of sperm returning. Only 60%. And 40% chance of actually getting pregnant. We didn't let it get us down though. We tried, and tried, and tried. And nuthin.

I went to the doctor and found out I had hypothyroid- a cause for infertility. Took care of that- levels are normal now. And still nuthin.

For the last 14 months we have continued to have Faith and Trust that the Lord brought us down this path for a reason. If nothing else, our marriage is stronger. It has to be. Infertility sucks. I have a deep respect now for women who go through this for years. I might end up being one of them. And it's sad. And really lonely. Not many understand. And when you see pregnant people EVERYWHERE,  Facebook postings, and lots of cute teeny tiny adorable babies- it really sucks that none of them are yours. And don't get me wrong I am always SO happy for my friends and family having these blessings- but I'm not gonna lie- its REALLY hard. I have cried out to God trying to figure out why He brought us down this path and we are still not pregnant. He continues to tell me to wait. So I will. Just a few nights ago I was asking the Lord why another month has gone by of tests with only 1 line and as I was reading my Bible the verse I was reading said this, "You of little Faith, why did you doubt?" He knew I was going to fall apart, and I did. Thankfully it didn't last long and I was back to having Faith and trusting that He knows the right time for us and I will wait.

I will admit this process has changed me. I have more patience, I rely on the Lord for direction more, but I am also a little more sad sometimes. So if I have seemed different, its probably because of this process we have been going through. I enjoy the 3 babies I already have immensely, they are my world and always cheer me up when I am feeling down. Thankfully I hide it well and the kids are not effected.

We have had Jeff tested and he fell into the 60%- he is fixed, things are back to normal. We continue to pray and ask God to bless us again. Our children ask God every night for a new baby. And sometimes I hope someone will decide to just give me one! We have looked into adoption- we simply can't afford it, we have looked into foster care- they say our house isn't big enough. Doors slammed shut, so we are 99% sure those are not paths we can go down right now.

If anything I have learned that I will advocate to anyone and everyone to not get a vasectomy. Do something less permanent. Or don't do anything at all. Children are a blessing. We will no longer use birth control and "play God". We will accept all the blessings the Lord wants to give us. Of course at this point- one more would be awesome! Remember us in your prayers- we would greatly appreciate it.

A Love Story...Part 4

We were finally engaged!!! FINALLY!!! I waited 2 years for this! The next morning I went to my mom and dad's house early to show my mom my ring!

Our engagement photo.

Pretty quickly I moved back home and Jeff got an apartment that I helped pay rent on. So things were a bit different for a while.

The next couple months were spent wedding planning and getting things ready ASAP- we were getting married in about 3 months so had a lot to do. My mom busted her behind and opened her wallet for about every single thing for my wedding- I am so thankful because I cannot imagine all the hard work and money she invested! My boss at the time designed and made my wedding dress as a gift to me- I still am in love with it! We ordered flowers and a cake, found a photographer..all at the last minute. I wanted a wedding in the Fall!!!!

We were starting our Fall semester of college- but were able to get some days off for our wedding and honeymoon...we would just have A LOT of homework when we got back! Things were all falling into place and went smoothly planning wise. A week before our wedding I was driving home from work and got my first traffic ticket- I ran a red light. I knew I did as soon as the light turned red before I got my car across that white line- I looked back and there were 2 motorcycle cops just sitting there...in California this cost me close to $400 to get it off my record..UGH! The next day Jeff got pulled over for having a light out- but was given a fix-it ticket. And then 4 days before our big day we woke up to hell breaking loose....

One of the twin towers were on fire and airplanes were crashing all over the place...it was a literal nightmare. One of the worst days ever. Jeff had left for school but came back home and we watched together as a plane flew through the second tower and life as we knew it was different. It was scary. We had TONS of stuff to do this week and were still working and going to school while doing them, so we proceeded with life. My flower girls' dad was in New York I believe at the time, so with all planes grounded he was unable to make it to our wedding. Other then that and the whole somberness of it all, our wedding was unaffected.

On September 15, 2001 I became Mrs. Sara ..... YAY! It was a great ceremony and my hot hubby dipped me and gave me a wonderful first kiss as husband and wife!! We partied on at the reception and had tons of fun! Afterwards we headed out to our honeymoon in San Diego...on the way there we spotted Ray Romano pumping gas at the gas station...super cool! When we got there and turned on the news, the events that we were seeing really hit us for the first time since we had been so busy before.

Here are some pics from our wedding!!

So there it is folks...almost 11 years later and I am still madly in love with my husband. He is an amazing Godly man, husband and father. I am so lucky he chose me!!

A Love Story....part 3

Now where were we?!?? Oh yes, he took FOREVER to tell me he loved me...finally on Valentines Day, just about a year after our first date he gave me a sweet card...and said  wrote I love you...lol. So....the next day we left to go to the youth conference he was a chaperone at every year...and I went with him this year. It was lots of fun, but on the first night I couldn't stand it anymore and I SAID I love you...and he said it back, and I am happy to say he has said it every single day since!

Whew now that we were over that hurdle, we went about our dating business and kept on dating...we were both in college full time and I was also working full time. Jeff had been looking for a job and was able to get one out of town in the LA area. Thankfully he just commuted and I was able to go with him quite often. He was a youth director at a church down in Reseda, CA. It worked out good for his school schedule, except he always had to be there on Sundays and sometimes Saturdays, which were my days off. I went with him a lot!!

About a year and a half after we started dating we were talking marriage. We used to love to take drives around mountain sides and all over and just talk; one of those times we talked marriage. I mentioned to my parents that we were wanting to get married soon and my mom told me that I needed to live on my own before getting married. OK. DONE! My friend Michele had an apartment and an extra bedroom so I moved in. It worked out great. My mom was also concerned that I would not finish college if I got married (I still had 2 years left)...I promised her I would..(and I did!)

So I lived on my own for a while, and worked and went to school..and we kept on dating. 2 years after we started dating, we made it over to a jewelry store and he said I could try on some rings. So I did! And I found one that I loved...and we ordered it! And then I waited, and waited...and wondered when he would pop the question! After 2 months of waiting I finally asked him if he was ever going to give me the ring. He said well I have a credit card issue and haven't been able to pick it up..UGH!!!! Well, we were finally able to work that out and we went together to pick it up. Then we went back to my place and he placed the bag on the tv in my room. And we sat there and stared at it! I finally said, are you ever going to give it to me. He said yes and went and got it. Then he gave it to me and said, "So, do you still want to marry me??" - romantic eh!?? I said I guess so...

24 hours child-free!!!

Last weekend the husband and I were able to run away to Denver...by ourselves!!! We do this about once a year and always have so much fun together. We have real adult conversations without being interrupted- it's amazing! I usually get very little no kid time; since we homeschool I have a kiddo with me at all times. Even during sleeping hours- we have a 4 year old who likes to sneak in...every.single.night. (we have tried a million things-nothing keeps her out) I pretty much love every moment (except the getting in my bed thing) - it's become my normal and I wouldn't trade it for the world!

I digress, we called up Grammy and said can you come watch the kids so we can get away...she said sure! Saweet! So we left as quick as we could, before she changed her mind and remembered about Sadie's getting into bed with people!

We left on a Friday afternoon and headed to our hotel..it was nice. We got everything situated, then got ready for dinner- Sushi! My man loves me a whole lot cause I say Sushi and he makes reservations! We took the light rail to downtown Denver so we wouldn't have to drive in traffic on a Friday eve. It had glorious AC and it was fun to be able to sit and chat for 45 minutes while we were on the trip.  We went to Sushi Sasa- super yummy and highly recommended!!! It was a little noisy because they cram people in Japanese restaurants like its nobody's business...I did see another room that looked all quiet and dimly lit- but I assumed it was for important people. We had a good time none-the less. We got tempura Avocado...what is better than that?!? I got my usual Spicy tuna rolls and Jeff got something much more raw fishy..he is way more adventurous than me when it comes to sushi. After that we walked around a little bit before taking the light rail back to the hotel. The next day we relaxed, roamed the mall, roamed Ikea (found an awesome new work station for our homeschool room), browsed the bookstore, then grabbed a late lunch and headed home. The kids didn't miss us- next time we will take a little longer to come home- like maybe another day.

I didn't take many pictures cause well, there wasn't much that was super exciting! Here are some from the restaurant - I didn't want to use my camera flash and draw attention to us, so you have to settle for cell phone pictures!

He's way HOT!

YUMMY!

He said I could post this!!

A Love Story...Part 1

Long, Long Ago...in a village far away there lived a princess...j/k...(well maybe not)...

I grew up in Southern California and had just finished up my first semester at the junior college- which I bombed!!! You actually had to study and work at college...who knew??!! I was 19 and had dated a few guys in high school- nothing serious, just casual dating. I knew though that I hated dating..I just wanted to fall in love, get married and have lots of babies!! I was pretty strong in my Christian faith, and decided I would ask the Lord to only send me my husband because this dating stuff was for the birds! So I strayed away from seeking out men and just did my work and school thing.

I was still living at home (perk of Junior College) and a friend called and said her and some other people were going to Disneyland soon (one of the people was a guy I had dated) and wanted me to come along cause he might still be interested and it would be fun! I decided I was up for it- who knows maybe it should have been something more serious! My friend was going to spend the night and we were going to wake up early and head out. I had to get something out of the garage that was high on a shelf - I went out barefoot- and as I was getting this thing (I don't remember what I was getting) a plastic boot that my mom had worn on her leg when she broke her ankle fell and hit my foot. (ironic?) Immediately my big toe is spewing blood...like straight up in the air..all over the place. I get it under control before I pass out- I pass out very easily! It is decided there is no way I can walk around Disneyland. I am super bummed, like REALLY bummed out and crying. Disneyland is fun even at 19 and even after you have been a million times, so I was so sad not to get to go.

In my mopyiness I decide to get online (this was 14 years ago- not much available so when I say online it was AOL) my screen name was ShopChic5- (I don't exist on AOL anymore so don't go looking) I am browsing around- not really sure what exactly I was doing; when I get an instant message from a Jeffrey330...what a nice guy he was!! We chatted for a while and I asked how he found me- he said he searched for girls in our small town that were Christians and had the same birthday as him...I didn't believe him on the same birthday thing!! And we chatted for a few days online only finding out we had A LOT in common; both our mom's were teachers, we both were going to school to be teachers, we lived a few blocks from each other but had never met,we knew a lot of the same people, we went to the same high school just at different times and LOTS more!! He kept teasing me saying when are we gonna meet- and there was NO WAY I was going to meet this guy in real life!!! I did agree that I would call him about a week after he found me online- when we talked our online conversation just seemed to continue- getting to know each other better...and boy did he have a nice voice...it was DREAMY!!!! We would talk for literally hours on the phone- way past bedtime. Then it had been long enough- the boy wanted to MEET the girl!!!! I finally agreed....

Stick with it Saturday!!!

I am starting a new weekly series that goes along with one from one of my favorite blogs Sam's Noggin- she is a homeschooling mom of many much like myself. She has been on a weight loss journey for a while and is constantly trying to better herself. I believe part of being a good mate to my husband is to make sure I am healthy and in good shape- this is good for me and my self-esteem as well, I am needing a little motivation to keep up my workouts through the summer (especially since I took 2 months off). Having my husband home and dealing with the summer heat is very un-motivating- but I am back in the saddle and ready to melt some pounds away!! Feel free to join me in trying to be more healthy and exercise regularly- you can make a comment sharing what workouts you have done in the last week if you like, or just check-in to see how I am doing!!

This week I did only my elliptical- I am hoping to venture into some strength training using my workout videos next week- but wanted to start out easy just getting back into the routine.
Monday- 35 min. elliptical + 200 crunches
Tuesday- 35 min. elliptical + 200 crunches
Wednesday- walked around an amusement park all day (does this count??)
Thursday- 35 min. elliptical + 200 crunches
Friday- 35 min. elliptical + 200 crunches

WOW I didn't realize how boring my workouts are!!! I have tried to watch what I eat more this past week as well. I probably tend to over-eat because my skin and bone husband eats a lot and has a super fast metabolism so I always want to eat as much as he does and I just can't do that anymore!! My goal for this next week is:

- to watch my portions and make good food choices
- do 2 exercise videos during the week and 3 days on the elliptical

How did you do on your workouts this week??

10 YEARS!

Last week my husband and I celebrated 10yrs of marriage! I cannot even believe we have been married for 10 years! It has seemed to go by in an instant. We started out with both of us in college and working full time jobs to boot- and now we are both working full time jobs (mine a non-paying job) and him a full time plus a couple part times added on. We have been through ALOT together- tons of ups and downs as most marriages face; but with God and each other we have worked through them and proven that our love for Christ and each other is way more important than anything else. I love my husband more today then the day I married him. He has become such an amazing man of God and such an amazing husband and father. He is my help-mate, and the Lord made him perfect for me.

One day I hope to share more about how strong our marriage is and the things we have gone through together that have strengthened us. We have been so blessed and hope to share more blessings soon!!!

Here are a couple pictures to share-top is from our wedding day and one from our date night last weekend.
